Philately

Philately is a hobby which has been dying down because of the rise in popularity of the postal envelopes, having postage paid for in advance. However, it is also quite young, because philately is the study of stamps and postal history (usually relating to stamps, being now the figure head of post across the world). In fact, it is so young, many of the first stamp collectors are famous and world renowned, with much known about them, being people such as: Stanley Gibbons (now the name of a famous stamp collecting shop), John Bourke (the first stamp collector, collecting revenue stamps in 1774, which first came in in the 16th century) and Prince Alfred (son of Queen Victoria, who started the royal stamp collection, being, arguably, the world’s largest stamp collection, consisting of 200 albums and 300 boxes).

Many across the world now practice it, with some buying rare and valuable stamps for millions of pounds, and some buying cheap stamps, to then enjoy the art and information that they show, being from wildlife to politics. Some also enjoy the exiting peculiar stamp types, such as: overprints, cinderellas, mistakes, fakes and forgeries.

It is a very good hobby to pass your time with, which is why this website is devoted to this amazing hobby, which is for everyone, going into all subjects and all budgets.
